Matinee idol Rogelio dela Rosa, here shown in a LIFE Magazine photo, was the first movie actor to be elected to the Senate and who ran for the presidency in 1961 against his brother-in-law, Diosdado Macapagal (Macapagal’s first wife was de la Rosa’s sister). But in the end, de la Rosa withdrew from the presidential race. Nick Joaquin wrote a classic account of de la Rosa’s ill-fated presidential bid in The Untimely Withdrawal of Roger de la Rosa.
